Profile

Rural Office for Architecture is a young design office based near Newcastle Emlyn, West Wales.

It is the work of architect Niall Maxwell, assisted by Rhodri Thomas, Kieran Rees & Helen Maxwell

Niall and Helen moved to Wales from London in 2004 and established the studio in 2005 to work on the development of Cardigan’s historic port on the Teifi river estuary.

The practice has focused on developing a vernacular design response to the rural context in which they live and work.

The office is staffed by local people, who are mentored or apprenticed to develop skills or gain qualifications that can be transferable within the design market.

The practice is currently undertaking research into the development of a rural pedagogic design build programme.
