Project Information

We have been working with the Brynamman Lido Committee and the Architectural Heritage Fund to develop ambitious proposals for the regeneration of the historic lido in Brynamman as a new community asset. The pool has been closed since 2009 and is now in a state of disrepair. Our ongoing work helps the local community test the potential for the scheme and consider how best to redevelop the asset within the current funding landscape.

The open air swimming pool was built in the late 1920s as part of a community initiative in response to the economic depression. Brynamman, as with other coal mining areas, suffered from extreme levels of unemployment and poverty. Miners donated a penny from every pound of their earnings to support the project, and collective input into the building works helped to boost the local economy and lift community spirits.
