Project Information

Llanishen Reservoir represents a major Welsh civic engineering scheme that has survived virtually intact. Constructed between 1884-1887 the reservoir forms part of the nineteenth century water supply system for Cardiff, from its source in the Brecon Beacons. This suburban hinterland on the edge of the city offers a place to strategically explore the notion of recreational space between varied conditions.

Our design feasibility examined the potential for a new country park surrounding two vessels of bunded water. Using the Victorian infrastructure as archaeological ‘pavilions’ we created a new pleasure garden, connecting different activities and pathways. With an elevated horizon, the gardens become detached from the city, creating an opportunity for escape and recalibration.
